Install
Download Snipstack for macOS, Windows or Linux and get past the first-launch warning of the unsigned builds.
Download Snipstack from the download page. It lists your system first.
What to download
| System | File | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11 (x64) | Setup .exe |
Installs for your user only, with no administrator prompt. You can change the install folder. It adds desktop and Start menu shortcuts. |
| macOS (Apple silicon) | .dmg (arm64) |
Drag Snipstack into Applications. |
| macOS (Intel) | .dmg (x64) |
Drag Snipstack into Applications. |
| Linux (x64), any distribution | .AppImage |
Make it executable and run it. Updates itself. |
| Debian, Ubuntu (x64) | .deb |
Install with apt. Update by installing a newer .deb. |
On Windows the default install folder is %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Snipstack. On Linux the program is called snipstack.
Which builds update themselves is explained on Updates.
First launch: unsigned builds
The 1.x builds are not code-signed yet, so Windows and macOS warn you the first time you open Snipstack. These steps are only needed once per install.
Windows
- Run the Setup
.exe. It installs for your user only, so no administrator prompt appears. - If Microsoft Defender SmartScreen says "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway.
Updates install in the background and apply the next time Snipstack restarts.
macOS
- Open the
.dmgand drag Snipstack into Applications. - Open Snipstack once. macOS blocks it and offers only Done or Move to Trash: choose Done. Then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the message about Snipstack, click Open Anyway and confirm. On macOS 14 Sonoma and earlier, you can instead right-click (or Control-click) Snipstack in Applications, choose Open, then click Open in the dialog.
- If macOS says the app "is damaged and can't be opened" (common on Apple silicon for unsigned apps), remove the quarantine flag in Terminal, then open it again:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Snipstack.app
macOS only installs updates for signed apps, so until signed builds ship, update by downloading the new .dmg from the download page.
Linux
- AppImage:
chmod +x Snipstack-*.AppImage, then run it. AppImage builds update themselves. - deb (Debian, Ubuntu):
sudo apt install ./Snipstack-*.deb. Update by installing the newer.deb.
The global shortcut and the tray icon depend on your desktop environment. On Wayland, global shortcuts may not be available; Snipstack then tells you so, and you can bind snipstack --quick in your desktop's keyboard settings. On X11, if another app holds the shortcut, Snipstack asks you to choose another.
Auto-paste
Snipstack copies by default. Auto-paste is opt-in (Settings) and needs Accessibility access on macOS, and xdotool (X11) or wtype (Wayland) on Linux.
