Updates

Which Snipstack builds update themselves, how updates install, and how to turn automatic checks off.

Which builds update themselves

Build Automatic updates
Windows (Setup .exe) Yes
Linux AppImage Yes
Linux .deb No: install the newer .deb from the download page
macOS No, until signed builds ship: download the new .dmg from the download page

The current macOS builds are not signed, and macOS only installs updates for signed apps. They make no update requests at all, and Settings > About shows that the install is updated by hand. Its Downloads link opens the download page, and Release notes opens the changelog.

How it works

On builds that update themselves, Snipstack checks downloads.snipstack.dev 30 seconds after it starts and then every 6 hours. A new version downloads in the background. When it is ready, Snipstack shows “Snipstack version is ready” with a Restart button; otherwise it installs the next time you quit. On Windows, with Restart the update installs silently and Snipstack starts again; otherwise it installs silently when you quit.

Every download is verified before it is installed. A file that fails the check is discarded (“The downloaded update failed verification and was discarded.”).

Settings > About shows the update status (for example “Snipstack is up to date.”) with Check for updates, or Restart to update once an update is ready.

Turning automatic checks off

Turn off Settings > About > Check for updates automatically. Snipstack then never checks on its own; Check for updates (in About or the palette) still checks once when you click it.

If a check fails

Message What to do
