Settings

Every setting in Snipstack and its default.

Open Settings with Cmd+, or Ctrl+,. Settings are saved per device and are never synced. Inside Settings, Cmd+1 or Ctrl+1 to Cmd+6 or Ctrl+6 switch between the six tabs.

General

Setting Default What it does
Theme System System, Dark or Light.
Launch at login Off Starts Snipstack when you sign in, quietly in the tray if the tray is on. Called “Start Snipstack when Windows starts”, “Open at login” (macOS) or “Start at login” (Linux).
Show in tray (macOS: Show in menu bar) On Recent snippets and sync status a click away. Closing the window keeps Snipstack running there, so the hotkey stays ready.
Global quick-search hotkey Option+Space or Ctrl+Shift+Space Opens the quick search window over any app. See below.
Paste into the active app Off Cmd+Enter or Ctrl+Enter in quick search copies, then pastes where you were typing. See Auto-paste.

Launch at login is read back from your system rather than stored. On Linux it writes ~/.config/autostart/snipstack.desktop. It is not available when running Snipstack from source.

The first time you close the window on Windows or Linux with the tray on, a notification says “Snipstack is still running in the tray.”

Changing the hotkey

Click the hotkey (or focus it and press Enter) and press the new combination. Esc cancels. Backspace or Delete (the prompt names the key) clears it, which turns the global hotkey off (“Not set”).

  • It needs a modifier other than Shift: Ctrl, Alt or Super (Control, Option or Command on macOS). Function keys can be used on their own.
  • Numpad keys cannot be used.
  • Ctrl+Space is refused: the system uses it to switch input source. On macOS, Command+Space is refused because it opens Spotlight.
  • If another app already uses the combination, Snipstack says so and keeps your previous hotkey.

Editor

Setting Default Options
Font JetBrains Mono (bundled) Fixed
Font size 13 px 10 to 24 px
Tab size 2 2, 4 or 8
Line wrap Off Wrap long lines instead of scrolling horizontally

Sync

Connect, sync now or disconnect your database. See Sync with Turso. Changes are always saved locally first, sync runs automatically, and conflicting edits are always kept as copies; none of this can be turned off.

Shortcuts

A read-only list of every keyboard shortcut, with a filter. See Keyboard shortcuts.

Data

  • Export all snippets and Include remembered values (off each time): see Import and export.
  • JSON file: import a Snipstack export.
  • Automatic backups > Open folder: the backups saved before a database replaces this device’s library. See Data and backups.
  • Starter commands: add the starter set again.
  • Conflicts to review, when there are any, with a Review button.

About

Setting Default What it does
Check for updates automatically On See Updates. Shown as “Not available in this build.” on builds that do not update themselves.
Detailed error logging Off Adds stack traces and extra detail to the local log file. Turn it on while tracking down a problem.

About also shows the version (with the Electron, Chrome and platform versions), Check for updates / Restart to update, Copy diagnostics, Open logs folder, and links to the downloads (Downloads) and the changelog (Release notes). Below them, Buy me a coffee opens the developer’s support page in your browser.

Copy diagnostics puts a report on your clipboard for a bug report: versions, settings, sync health, library counts and the last 200 log lines. Credentials, database addresses and folder paths are removed, and snippet content is never included. Nothing is sent anywhere; you decide where to paste it.
